You can also ask Dave a question not shown here yourself if you want. Just e-mail your question to me (webmaster@davegibbonsfansite.com) and i will pass it on to Dave. The answer could take a while, since he is very busy, but we will try our best to get back to you and your question will be added to this section complete with an answer from Dave.
You can find some art at www.artdroids.co.uk or try to find Dave at conventions where he sometimes sells his pages. - S.-H.
2. Does Dave do commissions ?? Can i get a sketch from him?
The answer is no, i'm afraid. Dave is much too busy to do commissions or free sketches for all his fans. Trust me, i have tried :-) But, when you meet him at a convention, go ahead and ask him. He is a very friendly guy and i am sure he will do a sketch for you. -S.-H.
3. What kind of tools do you use for your work?
There was a website detailing all the tools that Dave uses. Unfortunately it has disappeared. Any help in recovering the info would be greatly appreciated. -S.H.
4. Where can i buy comics that Dave did?
Again, see the links section. There is a listing of several comic shops, but also listings from amazon.com for the search string Dave Gibbons. -S-H.
5. Could i buy a copy of the Watchmen script from you?
I'm afraid I can't release any of Alan's WATCHMEN script. We may reprint it if ever we do a further special edition. - Dave
You can also order Dave's new book "Watching the Watchmen" with many more details about the origin of the comic including script pages, character designs and much more. - S.-H.
6. Can i send you a trading card, comic, book,.... to sign?
Sorry to say that Dave just does not have the time to sign any items per mail. No exceptions. But he will gladly sign anything you bring to him at a convention. - S.-H.
7. Can Dave do a drawing for my fanzine, local newspaper, etc.?
Again, i am sorry to say that Dave has very little time and spends his time drawing comics or being with friends and family. So the answer to this question is NO i'm afraid. If you know Dave personally, it of course does not hurt to ask again, but the chances of it happening are not very high. - S.-H.
8. How did you break into comics / Do you have any advice on how to break into comics?
"I actually didn't attend art school of any kind but learnt to draw by copying comics and reading every art instruction book I could find. Don't limit yourself to superheroes. Learn to draw everything!
I submitted stuff to fanzines, then underground comics and finally mainstream comics publishers. At first, I did balloon lettering and joke cartoons. Anywhere you can get published and see your work in print you should pursue.
It's not so easy to get into print these days, as there are less magazines published. but get your stuff onto the internet and use it to network all you can.
I was once told that there are three things you need to succeed in commercial art and any two out of three should be enough:
1/ You have to be really talented.
2/ you have to be really reliable.
3/ you have to be a really nice guy.
At first, if I wasn't good, at least I could be reliable and nice!
Finally, you really need to love to draw. Comic artists sit on their own in a room for 8 or more hours a day and produce consistent work week in, month out. Make sure you have that drive.
Best
-- Dave"
